FRIDA LAS VEGAS HAND KNIT MERINO WOOL JUMPERS FOR WINTER 2024

Ever since I was a teenage op shopper fervently rummaging through suburban bargain bins, I’ve lusted over hand knitted jumpers from the 1980s. There’s something about the cosiness, comfort and balls-out wackiness of knitwear from this particular era that has always resonated with my OTT sensibilities.

It has been my goal since 2014 when I started making art fashion accessories under the name FRIDA LAS VEGAS to eventually design and produce my own knitwear range. After 10 years learning the necessary skills (slowly does it!), waiting months for the sheep to grow enough Merino wool to begin sampling (yup true story) and meeting the right collaborators to help bring this idea to fruition, it hath finally happened.

In the grand tradition of the gloriously daggy Australiana knitted jumper, say g’day to the FRIDA LAS VEGAS knitwear collection!

FRIDA LAS VEGAS knitwear is consciously produced in partnership with Indian initiative Knit One Change One (KOCO). KOCO’s education and employment program helps to upskill women working in rural India, starting a new economic cycle for each knitter who gains full-time employment and financial independence for themselves and their families.

Hand knitting not only allows for significant artistic expression from a design perspective, it also promotes environmental sustainability. Using locally sourced 100% Merino Wool materials that reduce the carbon footprint associated with large-scale textile production, KOCO’s processes are designed to minimise waste, making every FRIDA LAS VEGAS statement piece as eco-friendly as it is truly unique.

The FRIDA LAS VEGAS knitwear range is a bold statement in the fashion industry, championing the cause of sustainable fashion while embracing the vibrancy of popular culture iconography. My goal is for the designs to bring a smile to your dial, keep that tushy toasty and celebrate the craftsmanship of highly skilled female artisans who spend up to one month knitting each statement piece entirely by hand. It’s the opposite of fast fashion - in fact hand knitting can’t get any more ‘slow’ fashion if it tried - but the results speak for themselves, don’t you reckon?!
