Where else but Australia would you devour a rainbow Paddle Pop in the shade of the Big Pineapple, while listening to Kylie and wearing a prawn knit jumper? Shrug off the cultural cringe - Australia’s love of all things kitsch is something to celebrate!
In Australianarama, artist and designer Stavroula Adameitis brings to life the good and the so-bad-it’s-good of decades past with playful commentary, colourful illustrations and archival photography.
Full of nuance and nostalgia, the book covers everything from objectionable objects to spiffy structures, Expo 88 to the Sydney Olympics, including interviews with Australia’s kitsch-spert icons like Art Simone, Dylan Lewis, Katherine Sabbath and Tony Albert along the way.
It’s an encyclopedia for all Australians – send it straight to the pool room!
Australianarama is published by Pink Shorts Press and distributed by Simon & Schuster.

Stavroula Adameitis is an Australian artist, author and cultural futurist obsessed with all things kitsch. Her work sits gleefully at the intersection of popular culture, nostalgia, maximalism and futures-thinking.
Since starting her art practice Frida Las Vegas in 2013, Stavroula has created work for Adobe, Meta, Westpac, the Sydney Opera House and the Art Gallery of South Australia, designed prints for Katy Perry and dressed a worldwide cult of glamazons who understand that more is always more. She is co-founder of SA Futures Agency and recipient of the 2025 40 Under 40 Creative Thinker Award. Australianarama: A Campendium of Kitsch is her first book.
If Australianarama has got you fizzing like an ice-cold can of Passiona straight from the esky, Stavroula welcomes invitations for public talks, workshops, media interviews and creative collaborations. Get in touch here.
