Recently I facilitated a ‘Pop Art Paper Dolls’ workshop for kids aged 8 - 12 as part of the Sherman Centre for Culture & Ideas ‘Stepping Stones’ youth program that explored key fashion design principles in a hands-on (and super cute) way.

The 18 budding designers in this device-free workshop were encouraged to use ‘oldie but goldie’ art materials - pencils, paper, coloured textas, scissors, glue sticks - to sketch and conceptualise their own personal dream outfit.

Once the idea was put to paper, the challenge was to draw and cut each individual garment and ‘dress’ a faceless, genderless 3D paper doll, which the kids customised with whichever hair, makeup or body adornments they pleased.

The budding designers then presented their paper dolls as part of a bold runway set to David Bowie’s ‘Fashion’, learning that fashion design is a participation sport and delighting their parents and friends in the process.

Thank you to the SCCI team for inviting me to run this workshop and to the kids for reinforcing my belief that coloured pencils are worth their weight in entertainment gold, regardless of your age!
